Rivian — an American electric vehicle (EV)opens in same window manufacturer and outdoor adventure company — released the second generation of its flagship R1S (SUV) and R1T (truck) in June 2024. While the exterior design remains largely the same, the new models have been reengineered for greater efficiency and feature hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, and new features.

“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian CEO and founder. “Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date.”

Here are some highlights of the R1S and R1T for model year 2025:

  • Performance: The new R1 line-up offers in-house built Dual-Motor, Tri-Motor, and Quad-Motor options for increased power — ranging from 533 to 1,025 horsepoweropens in same window. The Tri and Quad options feature lighter motors in the front of the vehicle to optimize efficiency, and larger motors in the back to maximize power. These drive systems are designed, engineered and manufactured by Rivian end-to-end — enabling the company to increase production efficiency, which in turn helps reduce costs for customers.
  • Ride and Handling: The new generation of R1 vehicles feature a fully reengineered suspension system to deliver a smoother ride for both on-road and off-road trips. The new springs, dampers, and hydraulic roll system are similar to those found on “supercars.” Several of these enhancements were made in response to customer feedback.
  • Range and Batteries: The completely re-engineered battery packs on the new Rivian vehicles deliver greater driving rangeopens in same window while reducing both mass and costs. There continue to be three battery options offering the following estimated driving ranges: 270 miles for Standard pack, 330 miles for Large pack, and up to 420 miles for Max pack. Same page link to footnote reference 1 All Rivian vehicles can add up to 140 miles of range in as little as 20 minutes when charged with high-speed charging networksopens in same window — including both the Rivian Adventure Network and Tesla Superchargers.
  • Design and Experience: Many new features and options are available with the next generation R1S and R1T, including new interiors, paint colors, trim options, and tire and wheel choices. Perhaps most exciting is the new electronically tinted glass roof, which brings the concept of “sunroofopens in same window” to a whole new level, as well as the custom graphic illustrations to accompany each drive mode. The new models also feature an improved wireless phone charger and digital key entry from your iPhone, Apple Watch, or Google Pixel device.

Additional enhancements to the computing system, lighting, and infotainment systemopens in same window are also notable — check out stories.rivian.com to learn more. And all of this was accomplished while simultaneously simplifying manufacturing, reducing costs to customers, and improving the vehicle’s overall sustainability — 15% lower lifetime carbon footprint compared to the first-generation models, and about 50% less CO2 emissions from manufacturing compared to Rivian’s launch vehicles in 2022.

The new R1S (SUV) starts at $75,900, and the new R1T (truck) starts at $69,900. In Summary: Rivian released the second generation of its flagship R1 models — both the R1S SUV and the R1T truck — and are available through the R1 Shop now. The new models have been reengineered for greater efficiency and feature hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, and new features.

Same page link returns to footnote reference 1 Actual vehicle capability will depend on selected options and trim. Torque, horsepower, and acceleration timing estimates vary based on battery, tire, drive modes, vehicle load and weather. Official EPA values are noted — some range estimates are preliminary estimates based on the EPA test cycle and are not official EPA values. The EPA estimates range through a series of standardized lab tests that mimic real world conditions. Factors including tires, drive modes, HVAC settings and accessories can all have an impact on range.
